The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest co-educational fraternal organization in the world. Originally founded by Dr. Rob Morris, its purpose is to provide for the wives, daughters, sisters, mothers and widows of Master Masons. Today it serves all female relatives of Master Masons, and counts Master Masons also among its members.

To become a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a lady must be of good character, and a relative of a Master Mason in good standing, or who was in good standing at the time of his death. a gentleman must be a Master Mason. Both ladies and gentlemen must profess a belief in a Supreme Being.

Eastern Star is not a religion, but encourages each member to be active in his or her own church. Members of the Order meet for stated meetings once a month, and at other times for service projects, fund raisers, and social events.

Regular Stated Meetings:

Second Thursday of each month, meal at 6:30, meeting at 7:30 pm.

at Clemson Masonic Lodge

372 College Avenue

Clemson, SC

How to Join the Order of the Eastern Star:

  • Determine who your masonic affiliation is, what Lodge he belonged to or at least what city and approximate years. It is helpful if you also know his date of birth. This Mason may be your father, father-in-law, stepfather, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, son, or son-in-law . These data will have to be confirmed by the Chapter during the petitioning process. For a gentleman, this information is your own membership in the Blue Lodge, which must be maintained in good standing.
  • Contact a member of the chapter, and request a petition. Any member can get one for you.
  • Fill out the petition and send it with the initiation fee and first year's dues, which varies from chapter to chapter but is generally about $25-$50 total.
  • Your petition will be read in a stated meeting, and a committee will be appointed to confirm your Masonic affiliation and to meet with you.
  • The committee will report back to the chapter at the following meeting, and your petition will be ballotted upon by the members of the chapter.
  • You will be notified of the date set for your initiation, which will usually be at the next stated meeting.
  • You will probably be contacted by a member of the chapter who has been appointed your mentor for your first year. She will be able to answer your questions as to what to wear, what time to be there, and some of what to expect.
  • Your initiation is a beautiful, formal ceremony, in which you will learn about the heroines of the order, Jephtha's daughter, Adah;  Ruth; Esther; Martha; and Electa; and other lessons of the Order.
